Frequently Asked Questions
PureZzz FAQs
What is PURE Zzzs? How is it different from ZzzQuil?
The sleep experts at Vicks ZzzQuil created PURE Zzzs to give you a natural health product alternative to our bestselling ZzzQuil sleep aid. Our original ZzzQuil formula has the active ingredient Diphenhydramine HCI, an antihistamine, while our PURE Zzzs formula has the hormone melatonin. While both lines help you fall asleep, we’ve provided this natural health product alternative to our proven sleep aids line so that you can choose the product that works best for you.
How much PURE Zzzs should I be taking?
Because we have multiple ZzzQuil products and directions vary we recommend you refer to the product page or label for directions.

What is melatonin?
Melatonin is a naturally occurring hormone secreted by your body’s pineal gland. At nighttime, your body begins to secrete melatonin to help make you sleepy. In the morning, your body doesn't make as much melatonin as at night time. ZzzQuil PURE Zzzs not only has melatonin, but it also contains complementary blend of proprietary botanicals, like chamomile, lemon balm, valerian root and lavender.
Does melatonin interact with other medications?
Melatonin may interact with other medications that are also metabolized by the same liver enzymes, leading to higher plasma melatonin concentrations. It is recommended to consult with your healthcare provider if you are currently on a medication and plan on using melatonin products.
Can I overdose on melatonin?
Taking too much melatonin at once can disrupt your sleep-wake cycle and could result in next day grogginess. Because each person’s sleep cycle is different, as well as each person’s height, weight and sensitivity to hormones, there is no one-size-fits-all dose of melatonin that will work for everyone. It’s best to start with a low dose of melatonin as experts, from researchers from MIT to Dr. Oz, recommend. If you give your body more than it needs, it’s possible to have the opposite effect and disrupt your sleep-wake rhythm, making it even more difficult to fall asleep.
For how long can I take melatonin?
Consult a healthcare professional for use beyond 4 weeks.
Can I start and stop taking melatonin suddenly?
Yes. You do not need to taper off your use of melatonin. You can discontinue use at any time as well as use it only when needed. Because of this, it’s an excellent choice for travelers to help them negate the effects of jet-lag. Take once a day at bedtime until adaptation to new daily pattern.
